Hannah Claus

Hannah Claus

Broken Tech Broken Earth

Hannah Claus is currently a PhD student at the University of Cambridge and has long dreamed of studying in the city. Since arriving in 2024, she has embraced Cambridge’s vibrant academic community and its rich technological heritage. Her days often involve moving between libraries, laboratories, and cafés as she researches methods to make language processing in artificial intelligence more equitable.

Despite Cambridge’s strong sense of community and innovation, Hannah notes ongoing challenges around representation. “I’m often the only woman or person of colour in the room,” she explains. “However, I’ve been very active in raising awareness of this issue by organising various events to inspire others”.

Hannah is part of the Centre for Human-Inspired AI, which focuses on developing artificial intelligence systems that are designed to work for all people, rather than treating inclusivity as an afterthought. Looking ahead, she hopes to continue engaging in initiatives that bring the University and the wider Cambridge community together to collaborate and shape a more inclusive future for technology.

This story was shared by a volunteer as part of the Broken Tech, Broken Earth project which aims to co-create events with the local community about the social, historical and environmental impacts of technology. This project is externally funded by the Esmeé Fairbairn Collections Fund as part of the Museum Association. The project is led by the Centre for Computing History, which is a registered educational charity and independent museum located in Cambridge. Our mission is to use our collections, displays, learning programmes, and events to engage the public with the developments in computing over the past 80 years.
