Shannon Clerkin is an AHRC-funded PhD researcher in Science and Technology Studies at UCL, where she explores hacker culture and the professionalisation of cybersecurity communities.

Currently she is a Teaching Fellow at King’s College London and the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), where she combines academic research with a passion for science communication, delivering workshops for young people across London.

Before academia, Shannon spent two years at Darktrace in Cambridge as a Cyber Security Analyst, an experience that shaped her understanding of the cybersecurity industry and sparked her interest in the people and cultures behind the technology. “ I am fascinated by the media representations of hacking culture and how the public’s understanding of cybersecurity has evolved over the years.” Cambridge remains a defining chapter in her career, inspiring her research at the intersection of technology, culture, and society.

This story was shared by a volunteer as part of the Broken Tech, Broken Earth project which aims to co-create events with the local community about the social, historical and environmental impacts of technology. This project is externally funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund as part of the Museum Association. The project is led by the Centre for Computing History, which is a registered educational charity and independent museum located in Cambridge. Our mission is to use our collections, displays, learning programmes, and events to engage the public with the developments in computing over the past 80 years.
