Inspector John Walker (Peterborough Police Museum)

74 Clarence Road, Peterborough

History of 74 Clarence Road

Cambridgeshire Crimes by John Bell tells the story of the attempted murder of Inspector John Walker.

Margaret Chapman, a midwife, had called at 74 Clarence Road, Peterborough following the birth of a child to the wife of Yugoslavian, Dusan Kubat. Kubat beat the midwife and stabbed Detective Sergent Vincent who had been called to the address.

Other police were called including Inspector Walker. Walker was stabbed and rushed to hospital. His heart stopped twice and he was given the Last Sacrament. Remarkably, he survived and returned to police duties, being awarded the British Empire Medal.

Dusan Kubat was later certified insane.
