CINEMA SAFE COMEDY
SUSPECT THIEVES PHONE POLICE
Two men who were so disgusted at their inability to open a safe decided to telephone to the police to arrest them.
This statement was made yesterday at Peterborough when John McEwan, of Glasgow, and Joseph Greaves, of Bolsover, were sent for trial charged with breaking into the Palace Picture House and stealing 11d.
Evidence was given that police were summoned to the cinema by phone at 6.20 a.m. last Thursday. The accused were seen through the glass panels of the front door, and, after letting the police in, McEwan said:—
“We tried to blow open the safe, and when we found it had not done it it broke my heart, so we telephoned for you. If we could have got the money we should have been gone.”
A safe was found on the floor. The door was damaged, but the contents (£60) were intact.
