5 Bell Hill, The Bell Inn (Bell and Anchor), Bell House, Histon

History of 5 Bell Hill

Listed building:

House. Mid to late C16. Exposed timber frame, modern pantile roof, rebuilt ridge stack. Two storeys.

Shepherd’s Club held at ‘The Bell’, Histon (MoC65/68)

Information from History of Inns and Public Houses in Histon and Impington (1990)

Histon Vestry suggests that this was the original Town House and meeting place of the Parish Council.

1686 property found in a list of inns. It was on the old highway to Ely via Aldreth.

1720s: owner of the Bell and Anchor was Hoste Archer, lord of the manor.

1775 Stuart Reynolds

1806 site owned by Thomas Sumpter. Hoste Archer’s sister married a Mr Sumpter.

1804 Philip Papworth licensee

1805 site auctioned

1817 Richard Papworth licensee

1836 owner Richard Foster

1851 licensee Sarah Papworth

1855 – 1856 Philip Chivers read the news about the Crimean War and was paid 6d.

1859 Richard Foster sold property to Frederick Bailey of Star Brewery.

1904 John Clapham publican of the ‘Burton Bell’

1912 Frank Tadman publican
