King’s Farmhouse, 21 High Street, Little Shelford

History of King's Farmhouse

Listed building:

House, late C19 but incorporating C16 timber framed and plastered cottage. Tiled roof. Two bays with gable end to road. Interior: Has some exposed timber framing on the upper storey and stop chamfered ceiling beams. Included for the C16 surviving part.

Dovecote, now garage, C18. Timber framed and plastered.

Fanny Wale wrote c.1908 about this building in Shelford Parva:

It was bought by Thomas Wale esq and given to Miss M F Wale, and when she died she left it to her niece Isabella Wale who married Doctor Sherlock  Willis, and had one daughter and seven sons.

Mrs Sherlock Willis was a daughter of Sir Charles Wale, and her only daughter Isabella, married John Frederick Eaden Esq. Mrs Willis sold the house to her brother Col R G Wale and he sold it to Mt Eaden when the latter married Isabella Willis. Therefore, it, with all the fields around King’s farm between High Street and the Whittlesford Road, belongs to the Eadens, and also the orchard, and Ivy Cottage and garden. In 1908 the Eadens went to live in Shelford Hall, and let King’s Farm to Capt. and Mrs Thornton, who have two small children. He is the Military Instructor to the University of Cambridge.
