According to Cottenham in Focus (2002) these houses were built by John Munsey on land awarded to him by the Cottenham Enclosure in 1842. The low lying land had previously been quarried and was known as Foulmire.
During WWII there was a searchlight battery nearby. Cottenham was situated between Oakington and Waterbeach airfields. There was also a dummy airfield at Great North Fen.
