The White Swan was in very poor condition as reported in the CDN 7 March 1907: there were large rat holes in the bar floor, the parlour floor seemed shaky and the whole place was permeated by a very unwholesome smell. It was impossible to open the windows, the plaster work of the ceilings was poor and the occupants of bedrooms on the second floor had no proper means of escape.
