In 2020 the Museum of Cambridge was sent a copy of this letter and photo. The letter was written by William John Hill (b 1897, Neath Glamorgan; died 1920, Neath) to his aunt and uncle in Neath, South Wales. It seems to suggest he might have been convalescing at the Warwick Hotel but we can find no evidence that the hotel was used for this purpose. His military record shows that he was awarded the DCM for gallantry while under fire (3.9.1918.)
Gunner W Hill, Warwick Hotel, Hills Road, Cambridge
Dear Uncle and Aunt, just these few lines in answer to your welcome letter. I was sorry to hear that Aunt Ellen is not in the best of health. I hope that she will soon be better. Glad to hear that William Henry is all right if he is much bigger than when I saw him he must be big. The weather up here is all right. Dunphy is home now. Have you seen him? Dear Aunt I have not got much time to write more I will write later hoping the letter will find you all in the best of health as it leaves me at present with fondest love from Willie.
