CIP 15.1.1887: Inquest. —On the afternoon of Saturday last, Mr. J. Bonnett held an inquiry at the Gwydir Arms, Gwydir-street, on the body of a newly-born child, the mother of which was Mary Ann Theobalds. The evidence given went to show that the woman, who 28 years of age, went home on Thursday night, as usual, to her lodgings in Gwydir-street. Ou Friday morning, her landlady went into her bedroom, and there saw evidence that a birth had recently taken place. A neighbour, named Mary Ann Thompson, was called in, and to her Theobalds said that the child would be found in her box. The witness went to the box, and there found the body of a child, quite dead. Dr. Roper was called in, and he stated that it was the body of a poorly nourished child. There had been hemorrhage on account of the laceration of the umbilical cord, and that had caused death. In answer to a question put to him by the Coroner, Dr. Roper stated that he was unable to say whether the child breathed after it was wholly born, but the lungs had been partially inflated. The jury, after a short deliberation, returned a verdict to the effect that the child died from hemorrhage consequent upon the laceration of the umbilical cord.
