The Chequers, Church Street, Little Shelford by Fanny Wale (Cambs Archives)Fanny Wale described in ‘Shelford Parva’ the rather complicated history of the Chequers and nearby buildings. At some point the ale-house and nearby cottages burned down. Thomas Austin rebuilt the ale-house and put up a painted sign on a post, thus naming it The Chequers.’ Henry Mansfield managed the pub for some years.
