Wisbech Castle

History of Wisbech Castle

A motte and bailey castle was built here by the Normans in 1072. It was rebuilt in stone in 1087.

In Tudor times it was a prison.

The site was redeveloped in the C17 and C18 centuries. During the English Civil War the castle was armed with cannon and the drawbridge was repaired.
