1847 23 January. Josiah Chater went to a party given by his brother William’s employer, Mr Basham. It began at 6 o’clock with ‘a very comfortable tea’ after which:

We had Charades and also played Mr Pickwick and Oliver Twist; we also had a Magic Lantern. Supper at ten – a glorious repast.
