A College Kitchen Porter
Number 38 is one of a terrace of five houses standing on the east side of Ainsworth Street.
1881 – 1888
John Wilson, 27, Bricklayer’s Labourer, b. Trumpington, Cambridgeshire

The Cambridge Burgess List for 1888 shows John Wilson still living at this property, however, they have moved next door to number 40, by 1891.
1891
The Head of Household is Thomas Hulyer, a 24 year-old, College kitchen porter from Cambridge. He is married to Alice, also 24, from Meldreth. They have a 6-month-old son called Walter James.
1901

1911-1939
Head of household on the 1911 census is George George, a 36 year old assistant sanitary inspector for the Borough Council. He is married to 31 year old May (nee Sewell), and they have three children.
May Georgina is 6, George William is 5 and Ronald Arthur is 7 months. The census records that the couple have been married for seven years. May’s baptism record shows that the family were living at 18 York Street in 1904.
“Special Constables – Cambridge List for the Coming Year – Special constables for the Borough of Cambridge, numbering 106, were sworn in at the Borough Police Court on Friday, before the Mayor, Dr. J.H.C. Dalton, Mr. R. Sturton, and Mr. G. Smith, and at a special court in the evening arranged for the convenience of those who found it difficult to appear in the morning. Appended are the names and addresses:- … George George, 38 Ainsworth Street” Cambridge Independent Press 31 October 1913
The Special constable list in November 1915 gives occupations. George is recorded as “corporation servant”.
The 1921 census records that George is still employed as an Assistant Sanitary Inspector, now for the Cambridge Corporation. Daughter May works as a tailoress for Frank Suttle Tailors on Fitzroy Street, son George is an errand boy for Mr. Gray’s Racket Makers on Sidney Street. Ronald is at school.
May married Leonard Asby from 20 Ainsworth Street in 1931.
George married Mabel Barber in 1931.
George died in Jan 1939, aged 64.
“Mr. George George – By the death of Mr George George, Cambridge loses one of the best known employees of the Borough Helath Department. For some 35 years he had been connected with the Sanitorium, and was a familiar figure on the ambulance. Mr. George, who was 64, resided at 38 Ainsworth Street.
The internment in his wife’s grave in Histon Road Cemetery on Tuesday was preceded by a service in St. Luke’s Church, the Rev. G.B. Whittaker officiating.” Cambridge Daily News 11 January 1939
