Clayhithe Bridge, Waterbeach

History of Clayhithe Bridge

A metal bridge spans a calm river, with a building featuring two circular signs on its facade situated on the grassy bank.

1875 In October the bridge over the Cam between Waterbridge and Horningsea was opened. Until then the crossing was by small ferry boats.

The River Cam flows under a bridge, flanked by grassy banks with trees, outdoor seating on the left, and moored boats on the right.

For more information about the history of navigation on the Cam see Enid Porter’s article: River Trade

The Museum of Cambridge has the wooden toll board of 1851 which used to stand near the bridge.

A metal footbridge with a grey railing spans a wide river, flanked by brick abutments and lush green trees on the banks.
