In 1981 when interviewed by Sara Payne (CWN 2nd April), Dorothy Crisp was living at 7 Summerfield, Newnham. She ran her shop here for carvers, gilders, frame makers and stationers until she retired in 1974. “The shop belonged to four generations fo Crisps and I lived there all my life absolutely bang in front of King’s College.” Her father, Angus William Crisp introduced all the handpainted college shields into Cambridge. He was also part of the great Wooden Spoon tradition, given to the student who got the lowest mark in the Maths Tripos. These spoons ceased to be made when Angus Crisp died c. 1951.
