In 1866 the University Union Society’s rooms were built, on the site of a courtyard surrounded by a dozen or so old houses known locally as ‘Parker’s Rookery’. The man who gave his name to the tenements acquired them some time after 1810, up to which year a Jewish service was held weekly in the courtyard in front of them.
