Number 36 is one of a terrace of five houses standing on the east side of Ainsworth Street.

Andrew Bareford and Ellen Elizabeth Franklin were married in 1876. The family supplemented their income by taking in lodgers, and they had two in 1881.
By 1891 the couple had moved round the corner to York Terrace, living in what is now no. 1, but then was known as ‘opposite York Terrace’.

George James Houghton was a striker’s labourer, which means he works for a blacksmith. He previously lived at 12 Sturton Street.
George married Eliza Sanderson in West Wratting on 24 March 1883.

In 1901 George was now a striker on the Great Eastern Railway, and no longer a labourer, which suggests he is moving up the ranks. Daughter Maud’s ‘press work’ would have been in the tailoring business.

George and Eliza Houghton had been married for 30 years, and had four children of which two had died.
Frank Houghton served with the Royal Engineers as a sapper during World War I. During his service he married Dorothy Ida Flock. They both gave Adam and Eve Row as their address, and Dorothy then lived at 1 Sturton Street.

George died in 1927, still living at no. 36.
Eliza Houghton remained at the property at least until 1939, when she appeared on the 1939 Register with her daughter Ethel (Maud) White and 23-year-old Roy White, a commercial motor mechanic. Ethel had married the family’s former lodger Christopher White in 1913, and Roy was their son.
Eliza died in November 1945 and is recorded as being ‘of 36 Ainsworth Street’.
