Number 84 is a mid-terrace house on the east side of Ainsworth Street. It carries a plaque reading Hazell Cottage 1871.
The deeds of the house indicate that Charles Hazell, a carpenter and builder, bought the land from Joseph Sturton in April 1871, and then sold it in December 1871. It seems likely that Charles Hazell built and named the house during those few months.
We can tentatively identify Charles Hazell as a builder who was born in Cambridgeshire in 1846. In April 1871 he was living in Mile End New Town, London, with his wife and sister-in-law. Although only 25, he was already running a business employing 2 men and 1 boy. 10 years later, still in east London, he was a master builder.

Lydia Southgate, head, 73, 1818, retired grocer, b. Mepal, Isle of Ely
Lydia must have been very well-off as she lives in the house on her own, with no lodgers or borders or family members. This is a striking contrast to neighbouring houses, many with five or six family members plus boarders/lodgers paying to stay, which means that some houses on the street had seven or eight in one house including children – even nine in one or two houses.
